Prisoner’s escape from Adiala Jail: six jail officials suspended
Rawalpindi:Six officials of Adiala Jail have been suspended following the escape of a prisoner due to alleged negligence by the jail administration, according to jail sources.
The incident took place during the routine prisoner count, when Nauman Masih, who was incarcerated on drug-related charges, managed to flee unnoticed. The escape went undetected for a considerable period, raising serious concerns about security lapses at one of the country’s most high-profile prisons.
In response to the incident, Inspector General (IG) Prisons issued suspension orders for six jail officials, including, Assistant Superintendent Altaf Hussain, Assistant Superintendent Sajjad Haider, Head Warden Muhammad Riaz, Warden Imran Khan, Warden Ammar Zahoor, and Warden Sher Zaman. These officials have been suspended for 90 days as part of disciplinary action. Authorities have also initiated a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escape.
Despite repeated attempts to seek a response, Superintendent Adiala Jail did not comment on the matter. However, IG Prisons has assured that strict measures will be implemented to prevent future incidents, and further actions will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry.
This is not the first time that allegations of negligence have surfaced at Adiala Jail. In recent years, multiple incidents of security breaches, including unauthorized access, smuggling of contraband, and lax surveillance, have been reported. Experts have repeatedly raised concerns over the prison’s security standards, given that it houses high-profile inmates, including political leaders and terror suspects.
Following an intense manhunt, Islamabad police tracked and arrested the escaped prisoner in Bhara Kahu, within the jurisdiction of the federal capital. The suspect has since been handed over to the relevant police station for further legal proceedings. Authorities are now focusing on identifying any potential inside assistance in the escape, while additional security measures are expected to be enforced to prevent future lapses.
This latest incident highlights the urgent need for prison reforms and stricter monitoring mechanisms to curb recurring security breaches within Pakistan’s correctional facilities. Further developments are expected as investigations continue.
