Malir Expressway to be connected with port to facilitate heavy traffic movement: Wahab
Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab has announced that work is under way to extend the Malir Expressway to the port for reducing traffic congestion in the city.
He stated that allowing heavy traffic on the Malir Expressway would ease the burden on the city’s roads, as heavy vehicles were a major cause of traffic congestion that wasted the citizens' valuable time.
Presiding over a meeting on traffic management issues in different areas of the city’s terminals and port on Friday, the mayor expressed his support for the establishment of truck holding areas and assured that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) would fully cooperate in this regard. He emphasised that only trucks with proper documentation and fitness certificates should be allowed to enter the port.
Wahab also called for financial contributions from transporters and port authorities to support the KMC’s development initiatives, noting that while heavy traffic moved through the city, the KMC did not receive any revenue from it.
The meeting was attended by Mauripur Town Municipal Corporation (TMC) Chairman Humayun Mohammad, Parliamentary Leader Karamullah Waqasi, and representatives of port authorities. During the discussion, the mayor highlighted the KMC’s recent achievements, including the completion of the Native Jetty Bridge repair after 40 years. He stated that the KMC was also handling repairs on the KPT flyover.
Stressing the need for collaboration, he urged the KMC, Karachi Port Trust, other port authorities and transporters to align their efforts for the city's betterment. Wahab further appealed to the transporters and port authorities to cooperate in improving roads in the Keamari area. He reaffirmed the Pakistan People's Party’s commitment to utilising public funds for public welfare.
