LAHORE: The Punjab Cabinet’s Standing Committee on Law and Order has approved the re-constitution of district peace committees across the province.
These committees are aimed at addressing sectarian disputes and ensuring peace during major religious events. The new structure includes high-level officials such as the Deputy Commissioner as convener, Capital City Police Officer Lahore, City Police Officers concerned and District Police Officers, District Manager from the Auqaf Department, representatives from major sects recommended by the District Intelligence Committees, having considerable religious influence and social contribution in their respective societal domain.
According to the terms of references (ToRs), the mandate given to these committees will also be included to promote sectarian harmony, resolving sectarian disputes and addressing conflicts leading to law & order issues respectfully and impartially.
The committees will focus on resolving conflicts before major religious occasions like Eidul Fitr, Eidul Azha, Muharram and others to ensure their peaceful conduct.
The Convener (Deputy Commissioners) will share the meeting minutes with the security agencies and Home Department’s Internal Security Wing to ensure ongoing coordination.
This initiative reflects the government’s efforts to maintain peace and stability in diverse communities across Punjab.
