KARACHI: Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) has successfully revived a heavy oil well in its Northern Region field, achieving a significant milestone for Pakistan’s energy sector.
The revival initiative, conducted at the Rajian Oil Field in the Gujar Khan Exploration Licence (EL), District Chakwal, aligns with OGDC’s strategy to enhance production capacity, according to a company statement issued on Monday.
Previously, the field’s four heavy oil-producing wells contributed 1,500 barrels per day (bpd). With the successful restoration of operations, the cumulative production from the Rajian Oil Field has increased to 2,500 bpd.
OGDC implemented a comprehensive optimisation plan for the Rajian field, comprising 11 workover jobs and the introduction of advanced artificial lift systems. The first focus of this plan, the Rajian-3A well, which reaches a depth of 3,652 metres, had been temporarily suspended in 2020 due to formation-related challenges. Using an innovative approach, the well was completed with an Electrical Submersible Pump (ESP) targeting the Chorgali-Sakessar and Tobra formations. The revival effort resulted in a production increase of 1,000 bpd from the well.
Work on optimising the remaining 10 wells is ongoing, with OGDC projecting further production increases. Rig N-4, owned by OGDC and dedicated to this initiative, will remain stationed at the Rajian field throughout the project’s duration. The company has committed to updating shareholders on the outcomes of these efforts, highlighting its focus on maximising asset potential and delivering value.
