PESHAWAR: An illegal fish market was shut down in the historic Ghanta Ghar area on Thursday.Commissioner, Peshawar Division, Riaz Khan Mahsud, acting on public complaints and social media reports, spearheaded a decisive operation to shut down an illegal fish market reestablished in the historic Ghanta Ghar.

The operation led to the sealing of nine shops, the arrest of shop owners and the donation of 134 kilograms of confiscated fish to the welfare organisation Zamung Kor. The move underscores the administration’s resolve to safeguard Peshawar’s heritage and address residents’ concerns. The reemergence of the fish market, months after its removal, had sparked outcry from residents who reported severe inconvenience caused by foul odors, noise, and unhygienic conditions.

The unauthorised market was also harming the city’s Heritage Trail, a significant cultural landmark. Taking notice of the issue, Commissioner Riaz Khan Mahsud directed Assistant Commissioner Syed Basharat to launch immediate action against the violators.

In a coordinated operation, Assistant Commissioners Syed Basharat and Amir Shehzad, accompanied by local police, sealed the illegal shops and detained their owners. The confiscated fish was promptly handed over to Zamung Kor for distribution among orphaned and destitute children.

Speaking on the operation, Commissioner Riaz Mahsud stated, “The protection of Peshawar’s historic identity and the well-being of its residents remain our top priorities. We will not allow illegal activities to compromise our cultural heritage or the quality of life in the city.”

To prevent future violations, the commissioner has ordered the permanent relocation of the fish trade to Chamkani, a government-designated area outside the city, and imposed a strict ban on fish-related businesses in Ghanta Ghar. Officials have been directed to monitor the area to ensure compliance.
