The 18th Amendment gave considerable autonomy to the provincial authorities. However, whether this approach has worked remains questionable. Right now, several of the provinces are in chaos. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister is openly challenging the writ of the state.
Sindh is being terrorised by dacoits from the katcha areas while the security situation in Balochistan is also deteriorating. In the present scenario, the federal government remains powerless and it is the people who suffer. It is therefore time that serious thought was given to amending the 18th amendment or doing away with it.
