Report on GBV launched
Islamabad: Syed Kausar Abbas, executive director of Sustainable Social Development Organisation (SSDO), said that the provision of excellent education and social values is the proof of any society’s superiority. More than 50 per cent of the country’s population consists of women. Those who are facing serious problems like rape, kidnapping, honour killing. Punjab province was the top of the list in cases of rape, out of 7,010 cases across the country, 6,624 cases occurred in Punjab. Sindh recorded the highest number of cases of abduction of women, 1,666. Sindh ranked first in reported cases of women being killed in the name of honour. 258 cases were reported in the province which is almost half of the honour killings in Pakistan. By providing protection, guardianship and sure justice to women and their families, law enforcement agencies will help in curbing serious crimes, says a press release.
The Sustainable Social Development Organisation (SSDO) has released a groundbreaking report, ‘Mapping Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Pakistan: District-Level Analysis of Rape, Kidnapping and Honour Killings,’ which offers a deep dive into the alarming scale of gender-based violence (GBV) across Pakistan’s provinces. The report was launched at event held at the National Press Club in Islamabad, bringing together key stakeholders, including policymakers, gender experts, and members of civil society.
Syed Kausar Abbas, executive director of Sustainable Social Development Organisation (SSDO), told that the report, based on data sourced from provincial police departments via Right to Information (RTI) requests, analyses GBV cases reported in Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan during 2023. It highlights the stark reality of underreporting and emphasizes the need for more robust data collection practices.
