ISLAMABAD: In a significant development for higher education and the health sector, Health Services Academy (HSA) in Islamabad has become one of the very few universities in Pakistan to receive a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Higher Education Commission (HEC) for launching a PhD programme in Health, Physical Education, and Sports Sciences.
This programme, set to commence in ‘Fall 2024,’ will address a critical demand for qualified professionals in health and sports sciences across educational institutions nationwide.
Prof. Shahzad Ali Khan, Vice Chancellor of HSA, expressed optimism about the new programme, stating, “The need for advanced qualifications in health and physical education has never been higher. All educational institutions, from colleges to universities, are required to have a Health and Physical Education (HPE) department, ideally headed by a PhD holder in the field. Our graduates will therefore find immediate employment opportunities, contributing to both education and public health sectors.”
With the rising emphasis on health and physical education in Pakistan’s educational institutions, there is a growing demand for highly qualified professionals to lead HPE departments. “The HSA’s PhD programme aims to meet this demand by equipping students with advanced knowledge and skills, ensuring they are prepared to take on leadership roles. The curriculum will cover various aspects of health education, sports psychology, coaching, and physical fitness, thus promoting a holistic approach to health education” Prof. Khan added.
He maintained that the introduction of this PhD programme aligns with HEC’s guidelines and requirements, as highlighted in the NOC issued to HSA. The HEC has underscored the importance of adhering to the prescribed standards for faculty, department infrastructure, and academic guidelines.
The university will be monitored regularly to ensure compliance with these standards, safeguarding the programme’s quality and reputation, he added.
Prof. Shahzad said HSA has been at the forefront of health education and policy development in Pakistan, offering a range of programmes aimed at improving public health. Recently, HSA has expanded its focus to include health policy advice, providing critical input to national health initiatives. This includes collaborations with international health organizations to address pressing issues such as communicable diseases, maternal and child health, and nutrition.
“Launching this PhD programme is part of our broader commitment to enhancing the quality of health education and research in Pakistan,” Prof. Shahzad Ali Khan added. “Our goal is to produce leaders in health and physical education who can not only excel in academic settings but also influence public health policy and practices at a national level.”
The launch of the PhD in Health, Physical Education, and Sports Sciences marks a new chapter for HSA, reinforcing its position as a leading institution in health education. By bridging the gap between education and health policy, HSA continues to contribute to the advancement of public health in Pakistan.
The initiative is expected to have a lasting impact, fostering a new generation of experts who will enhance the standards of health education and promote well-being across the country.
“This new academic offering by HSA is a testament to its dedication to meeting the evolving educational and professional needs of Pakistan, ensuring that its graduates are not only well-prepared for their careers but also capable of driving positive change in society”, he added.
