Alhamra to stage ‘The White Plague’ from tomorrow
LAHORE: Alhamra Arts Council, in collaboration with Bodhi Works and Geo TV, is set to present a theatrical production, ‘The White Plague.’ Directed and produced by the award-winning filmmaker Meher Jaffri, this five-day event will run from September 4th to 8th September, 2024, at Alhamra Hall 2, with performances starting at 8:00 PM each evening.
During a press conference, Alhamra Chairman Razi Ahmad expressed his admiration for Meher Jaffri’s work. Meher Jaffri praised Alhamra’s role in revitalising theatre. She revealed that ‘The White Plague,’ originally penned by Czech playwright Karel Capek in 1937, has been adapted into Urdu by Bodhi Works.
She said, the play, which serves as a sharp satire on the belligerence of nations and the brutal consequences of war, is particularly relevant in today’s global context. Its powerful message of moral consciousness and the need for peace over conflict resonates deeply, echoing the sentiments of a world still grappling with the horrors of war.
She further added that the production is dedicated to the memory of the legendary theatre artiste Zia Mohyeddin and features a talented cast, including some of his most distinguished students: Fawad Khan, Saad Zameer, Kashif Hussain, Samhan Ghazi, Manal Siddiqui, Safia Balashai, Danish Irshad, and Bilal Ahmed.
Alhamra Arts Council’s collaboration with Bodhi Works and GEO TV underscores its commitment to promoting meaningful art and cultural discourse. This production of ‘The White Plague’ not only offers a compelling fusion of drama and social commentary but also aims to inspire audiences to reflect on the consequences of war and the value of peace.
