Two cops injured, suspect killed in shootout

Two policemen were injured on Sunday and a suspect was killed after an exchange of fire took place in the Pehlwan Goth area in Gulistan-e-Jauhar between cops and drug peddlers.

The injured policemen were identified as 35-year-old Constable Mudassir and 40-year-old Head Constable Akbar, son of Muzaffar. They were initially rushed to the Darul Sehat Hospital from where they were later shifted to the Aga Khan Hospital.

The suspect killed in the encounter was identified as Samiullah, alias Mulla, Police said he was a notorious drug peddler who was booked in multiple cases, including those of police encounters.

Police sources said that after police received a tip-off about the presence of drug peddlers in Pehlwan Goth near the Habib University, a police team reached the scene to apprehend them. The suspects, however, fired at the cops with Kalashnikov rifles and tried to flee in congested streets.

In the ensuing exchange of fire, the two constables were injured and a suspect killed. Police said three other suspects managed to escape. They included Akbar, alias Akbari, Sher Zaman and an unidentified man. Police said they were making efforts to arrest them.
