PESHAWAR: Justice Shakil Ahmed of the Peshawar High Court (PHC) has underscored the need for empowering administrative officers to address issues like inflation effectively.

He said that empowering deputy commissioners and assistant commissioners is essential to curb inflation and maintain law and order in society. Justice Ahmed expressed concern over the lack of authority granted to administrative officers.

While hearing a petition against inflation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the judge remarked that every citizen must contribute to addressing inflation. He criticised the inefficiency of the government’s price review committee and called for legislative amendments to empower commissioners and deputy commissioners to enforce penalties effectively.

Justice Ahmed highlighted the need for legislation to protect people’s interests against profiteers and ensure accountability in price regulation. He emphasised on the importance of coordination between government agencies and proposed issuing detailed directives to address the issue of inflation.

The bench also called for measures to tackle corruption and implementation of laws to this end.The court adjourned the hearing, with plans to issue comprehensive directives to combat inflation effectively and hold accountable those who fail to implement directives and regulations, whether they are commissioners, deputy commissioners, or secretaries.
