Earlier, the PPP had formed the Sindh government after winning the general elections held in 2008, 2013 and 2018.

The February 8 general elections were held to elect the candidates against 130 general seats in the Sindh Assembly. The PPP candidates were elected against 83 general seats from all over the province. Its tally of candidates elected against the general seats in the provincial legislature is all set to increase to 84 with one MPA-elect from Jacobabad, who contested the election independently, announced his joining the PPP.

Mir Mumtaz Jakhrani, who has been elected from the constituency PS-3 in Jacoabad, has announced resuming his ties with the PPP soon after his poll victory.

Talking to media persons in his native town on Saturday, Jakhrani said that he had remained a part of the PPP’s family and he would continue his association with the Peoples Party in future as well.

He announced dedicating his poll victory to PPP leaders Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Asif Ali Zardari. Jakhrani said that his estranged ties with the PPP were only temporary and he would continue to act as an ordinary worker of the party.

He said that he was going to intimate the Election Commission of Pakistan about his decision to join the PPP. Jakhrani said that he would never imagine joining any party other than the PPP.

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan stands runner-up in the tally of seats in the Sindh Assembly. The MQM-P’s candidates have been elected against 28 seats. The Grand Democratic Alliance and the Jamaat-e-Islami clinched only two seats each. A total of 14 candidates have been elected independently to the provincial assembly.

Out of 22 seats of the National Assembly in Karachi, the MQM-P has bagged 15 seats while seven MNAs-elect from the city belong to the PPP.

The PPP is all set to grab the most number of reserved seats in the Sindh Assembly for females and religious minorities.

The PPP is yet to formally nominate its new leader of the house in the Sindh Assembly who will become the next chief minister.

Talking to media persons soon after winning the February 8 general elections, former Sindh CM Murad Ali Shah said that he was able to almost double his lead in his constituency PS-77 in the latest general polls as compared to the 2018 elections.

Shah said that he had won the 2018 general elections by a margin of over 30,000, and in the February 8 polls this year his lead had almost doubled.

He said that he had secured over 70,000 votes in the latest polls owing to outstanding public service by the PPP during its regime in the last five years. He said the PPP candidates had faced no significant competition while contesting the February 8 general polls elsewhere in the province.

The Election Commission of Pakistan has announced holding of a re-election in the constituency PS-18 Ghotki owing to irregularities in the poll on this seat on February 8.
