Karachi
Two alleged members of the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TP) were gunned down in an encounter with the Mehmoodabad police in the wee hours of Saturday.
A suicide jacket weighing six kilograms and pistols were recovered from their possession.
Mehmoodabad SHO Mohammed Sarwar told The News that information was received early on Saturday morning that TTP members were present in Kashmir Colony.
Acting on the information, a team of Mehmoodabad Police Station reached the spot. However, the suspects opened fire as soon as the law enforcers arrived and damaged their mobile, said the SHO. The policemen took positions and returned fire, and after the ensuing encounter they were able to arrest two terrorists in an injured condition.
The injured were rushed to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) where both were pronounced dead. When their hideout was searched by the police officials, two pistols, a ready-to-use suicide jacket and a hand grenade were found.
The Bomb Disposal Squad was called and its personnel defused the suicide jacket that weighed between six and seven kilograms.
The identity of the terrorists could not be ascertained immediately, but it was clear they were planning some terrorist activity in the city and were stopped in time.
