The University of Karachi's Department of Mass Communication on Thursday withdrew its decision to boycott semester examinations and conducted its first paper as per schedule.

Earlier, the department had threatened to boycott examinations over the government’s failure to pay compensation amount to its slain assistant professor as well as providing justice to the family.

KU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Muhammad Qaiser had requested the department to review its decision in greater interest of its students.

He had also assured to raise the issue in the upcoming Syndicate meeting of the varsity.

Later, the mass communication department decided to conduct exams as per schedule. On April 29, the department had organised a reference meeting to observe first death anniversary of Assistant Professor Dr Syed Waheed-ur-Rehman.

During the meeting, teachers of the department had threatened to boycott semester examinations, and demanded formation of a judicial commission and a JIT to probe the murder.

Dr Rehman was on his way to the varsity from his residence in the Federal B Area when he was shot dead near the Karachi Institute of Heart Diseases (KIHD) by unidentified gunmen on the morning of April 29, last year.
