Project launched for safe public transport for women

LAHORE: UN Women in collaboration with the Punjab Women Development Department has launched the pilot project in Lahore to make public transportation facilities accessible, safe and harassment-free for women and girls.

UN Women and the Punjab Women Development Department organised a training session for capacity enhancement on gender concerns in providing women with safe public places in Punjab on the premises of Lahore Transport Company to educate the participants while dealing with issues of harassment faced by women.

The two-day training session was attended motor mobile patrol inspector, transport and route enforcement inspectors, ticket checkers, fare collectors, drivers and others. The objective of the training was to create broader understanding among the participants about gender equality, gender-based violence, generation to generation change and responding strategy while dealing the complaints of harassment at public places particularly at bus stops and in public transport.

It is mainly aimed at strengthening the capacity of the staff conerned to ensure the promotion of gender equality and women’s empowerment agenda committed as enshrined in the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and Universal Declaration on Human Rights (UDHR).”

The training will be utilised as a tool to augment the notions pertaining to women empowerment and get insight into the inadequate understanding of the linkages between gender perspectives and gender responsiveness while working in different areas.
