Smuggled goods worth millions of rupees seized
PESHAWAR: The police have seized goods worth millions of rupees during a campaign against the smugglers involved in illegal transportation of cosmetics, cloth, tea leaves and other goods in the first quarter of the year, officials said on Saturday.
An official of the capital city police said all the police stations were carrying out action against the smugglers involved in illegal transportation of tea leaves, imported cloths, perfumes, cosmetics, cellphones and non-custom paid (NCP) vehicles.
“As many as 64 NCP vehicles have been impounded by police in different parts of the city. Besides, 9,386 rolls of cloth, 8446 kilogram tea leaves, 401 carton cigarettes, 2083 cellphones, 392 perfumes, 683 tyres and other goods worth Rs43 million were recovered by the police in different parts of the city in the first quarter of the year,” an official said.
He added that the recovery was far higher when compared to the same period last year.
“Eight vehicles, 2,561 rolls of cloth, 750 kilogram tea leaves, 146 carton cigarettes and other goods worth Rs0.6 million were recovered during the same period last year,” the official added.
He continued that because of police action against the smugglers, they were now staging protests against the cops by levelling baseless allegations to pressure the force to make sure police didn’t stop them in the city.
A few female smugglers staged a protest demonstration in Hayatabad the other day.
They claimed the police tortured them while allowed those involved in smuggling at the bigger level.
However, the officials of the capital city police termed the allegations baseless, saying they were protesting as police intensified action against smugglers.
