With a focus on creating awareness about bleeding disorders and building a family of support, World Haemophilia Day was observed at the Institute of Psychiatry here at the Benazir Bhutto Hospital to express solidarity with children suffering from the disorder.
Director General Health Dr. Assad Hafeez and the managing director of Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal (PBM) Abid Waheed were the chief guest and guest of honour, respectively.
Prof. Tahira Zafar, director of the Haemophilia Treatment Centre, discussed the disease, its causes, diagnosis and treatment. She highlighted the plight of the patients and the many challenges faced by them. She requested the MD of PBM and DG Health to support the care of these patients so that instead of being crippled by the disease, they can become useful members of the society.
Saif-ul-Islam, president of Pakistan Haemophilia Patient Welfare Society talked about the activities of the society which primarily focuses on education and awareness. Dr. Lubna Zafar, associate professor of Haematology focused on awareness of not only patients and families but also the caregivers.
The stress resulting from this long-term illness on patients and their families and their management was highlighted by Dr. Munawar Sher Khan and Dr. Ayesha Farid. Fozia Parveen, a patient who has overcome all problems and is now running her own institution shared her life experiences.
The executive members of the society Dr. Nadim IKram, Khawar Yasin, Anjum Malik, Naizi and Mushtaq, and volunteers Atta, Kiran Abdullah and Ali also actively participated.
