Poor condition at BHUs identified

The community coordinators for Basic Health Units (BHUs) of Lahore have identified problems confronting the provision of quality mother and child healthcare services to the marginalised segments in the suburban and rural areas of the provincial capital.
They were presenting their assessment of BHUs in their respective areas in Lahore during District Advocacy Forum organised by Empowerment, Voice and Accountability for Better Health and Nutrition (EVA-BHN) here at Committee Room of Directorate General Health Services, Punjab, on Tuesday.
The community coordinators identified that poor condition of buildings, lack of boundary walls, necessary equipment including ultrasound, cardiac monitor, ambulances, and adequate staff like lab technicians, Aayas and others at BHUs in Hair, Dhomkey, etc. They also demanded blankets and heaters for the upcoming season of winter to give required level of comfort to the mothers and newborns. They, however, praised the positive response of the doctors and staff and availability of medicines at these BHUs.
Anwar Saeed, District Support Manager of Punjab Rural Support Programme (PRSP) for BHUs of Lahore, took note of the problems and issues identified by the community coordinators and assured to provide missing facilities at the BHUs to ensure quality antenatal and neonatal care to the mother and newborn.
Dr Akhtar Rashid, Provincial Manager, EVA-BHN, Punjab, urged people to register their complaints about service delivery for at toll-free numbers so that immediate action could be taken to meet the requirements of the patients.
ACCIDENTS: Eight persons died in 593 road traffic accidents in all districts of Punjab during the last 24 hours, said a Provincial Monitoring Cell of Punjab Emergency Service (Rescue 1122) report. Besides, 475 serious injured were shifted to different hospitals of relevant districts.
