LAHORE
After eight consecutive days of protesting the Muttahida Mahaz Asataza Punjab (MMAP) ended its protest outside Punjab Assembly here on Friday evening. The MMAP has vowed to come back to Faisal Chowk, The Mall, again on May 21 and to observe black day in schools across Punjab on May 18. Before the teachers dispersed on Friday a rally was taken out from Masjid-e-Shuhada to Faisal Chowk in which dozens of schoolteachers participated and strongly criticized the Secretary Schools and the Punjab government for their indifferent attitude towards the schoolteachers. The speakers including Punjab Teachers Union (PTU) president Ghulam Mohy Uddin alleged some teachers including Kashif Shahzad, Rana Sultan Mahmood and Shahid Sharif were arrested by the police from Faisal Chowk, the venue of the sit-in, between Thursday and Friday night adding however it would not deter them from protesting for their rights.
They also said the MMAP’s “Save Education” campaign would not end till the government solves schoolteachers’ problems vis-à-vis promotions, regularization of services and disciplinary action over performance of students in the “mismanaged” PEC exams.
The report about the alleged arrest of the teachers could not be confirmed till filing of this report.
