The Karachi Water and Sewerage Board has authorised the closure of four operational hydrants in the city.
In a statement issued on Friday, the water board MB issued orders for four hydrants - in Gutter Baghicha, Old Golimar, New Nazimabad and Chakra Goth - to be closed down and dismantled immediately.
As per the communique, the decision was taken after consultation with and approval from the KWSB chairman and Sindh's local government minister. The orders also called for the dues from electric and water contractors to be recovered.
The statement said that the move was imperative to overcome the water shortage being faced by citizens in various areas of the city, adding that more such operations would be conducted till regular water supply was ensured across the city.
On Friday, the high temperatures caused over two dozen children and elderly people to be admitted for treatment with heat-related illnesses, as several areas within District East witnessed a severe water shortage. In areas including Gulshan-e-Iqbal and Gulistan-e-Jauhar water lines, following irregular supply for the past couple of weeks, went completely dry owing to the rise in heat.
