Two extortionists were arrested by police on Friday.
SSP Mohammad Farooq Awan said the special investigation unit and the citizens-police liaison committee had conducted a joint raid in Soldier Bazaar and after a shootout arrested Syed Amir Hussain and Nisaar Ali. TT pistols, cell phones and SIMs were found at their hideout.
During interrogation, it was found that Amir was the leader of his gang.
He confessed to extorting money from the management of the Karachi X-Ray Laboratory in North Karachi. The gang extorted Rs30,000 per month from the laboratory at first but for the past few months, they were collecting money every week. So far, they had taken Rs0.4 million from its management.
They also extorted money from private schools and other organisations including the APIK Private Limited. Earlier, they extorted Rs25,000 per month but now they had raised this amount by eight times. They also collected Rs20,000 every month from the IPSOS Pakistan Private Limited in Block-II of the PECHS, Rs30,000 from Al-Huda School, Rs25,000 from St George School in North Nazimabad, and Rs30,000 from Clarinet Chemicals in Korangi Industrial Area.
The SSP said Amir was absconding in the murder case of his wife. Besides, he was also wanted by the Kotri police.
A graduate
Amir had graduated with a Master’s degree in English Literature from the University of Karachi, reported Geo News.
He confessed that he had turned to a life of crime after he could not find a job and faced financial pressures at home.
“Domestic problems and my mother’s health forced me into doing this. If you ask me how I feel… I am very ashamed,” he said, reduced to tears as he spoke.
Amir added that he would try his best to find a “respectable profession” using his educational credentials after finishing his time in prison.
Robbers gun down ASI
An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of police was killed while his younger brother was injured in an armed attack near Tipu Sultan Road.
The deceased, ASI Ashfaq Sadiq, 45, accompanied by his younger brother, was going somewhere on his motorcycle when armed men attempted to rob him of the cash he was carrying. The police official put up a resistance to the robbers who opened fire at him and fled.
He was rushed to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre where he succumbed to his bullet wounds during treatment.
Tipu Sultan SDPO Khalid Khan said ASI Ashfaq had been carrying Rs200,000 when robbers tried to snatch it away from him.
He ruled out the possibility that the policeman had been targeted.
Two injured
Meanwhile, two nephews of former acting Balochistan chief minister, Mir Naseer Mengal, were injured in firing in DHA Phase VI late on Thursday night.
According to an official of the Darakhshan police, Deedar Ali Abbassi, Samiullah and Matiullah had been travelling in their vehicle when armed men opened fire at them near Sea View, injuring both.
However, he said, when the police inspected the vehicle, they neither found bullet holes nor blood stains in the car.
Darakhshan SHO claimed that the former chief minister refused to lodge an FIR.
Following the incident, Darakhshan SHO Deedar Ali Abbassi was suspended and the charge was given to Inspector Ghulam Hussain Pirzada.
