IGP again takes up compensation packages for fallen cops with govt

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police authorities have once again taken up the cases of a number of police personnel who were killed in the line of duty but their families were denied compensation package by the provincial government, it was learnt.
The case for compensation to families of these cops was taken up by the Inspector General of Police Nasir Khan Durrani recently but it was turned down by the Finance Department.
An official said that the IGP had again taken up the issue with the provincial government to address the genuine grievances of the families of these officers. Those who were recommended for the package were families of four cops of Mansehra. Four Elite Force constables were posted at a far-flung police post of Baser when earthquake struck the area, causing landsliding.
The constables were directed to help rescue the earthquake victims and the people trapped in the area after the landsliding.
According to Superintendent of Police Mohammad Afzal, the cops rescued a number of people but got themselves trapped in the snow. He added that the National Disaster Management Authority and Pakistan Army tried to rescue the trapped police personnel but could not save them.
The bodies of three Elite personnel, Constable Anwar Ali, Constable Shahzad and Constable Nasir were recovered by the Pakistan Army after a search operation in the area.
In another incident in Hangu, an Elite Force constable, Niaz Muhammad, was returning home after discharging duty when he saw a woman and other people in the vicinity crying where a child had fallen into a well.
The constable jumped into the well to save the life of the child. Unfortunately the pulley of the well fell apart and the constable died.
The IGP had moved a summary for granting a special compensation package for families of these cops but it was turned down by the Finance Department.
There are a number of other incidents where police personnel exhibited extraordinary conduct while working in extremely formidable circumstances that needed to be acknowledged.
Now once again the IGP has taken up this issue and has requested the provincial government to approve a special compensation package for payment of their salaries till superannuation, enlistment of one legal heir as constable and monetary grant of Rs1 million.
