Notification to be issued under ATA

ISLAMABAD: The operation against terrorists and corruption in Karachi will continue as the Rangers will get special powers to deal with the menace to be bestowed by the federal government.
The interior ministry would issue due notification for the same under the Anti Terrorism Act (ATA) since the federal government is determined to carry on actions against terrorists and corrupt people in the province.
Highly placed sources told The News late Saturday evening that DG Inter Services Intelligence (DGISI) Lt. Gen. Rizwan Akhtar Malik and National Security Adviser (NSA) to the PM Lt. Gen. (R) Nasser Khan Janjua had important meetings with Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif here at the PM House early in the day Saturday and had discussion about the overall security situation prevailing in the country including Sindh.
Officially, no word has been given about the particular meeting with the director general ISI but sources said the prime minister had expressed his views on the subject unequivocally that operation in Karachi would continue without any hindrance.
The federal government would intervene if the situation demands. General Rizwan Akhtar Malik who earlier served as DG Rangers Karachi very ably briefed the prime minister about the situation in Karachi and achievements made by the Rangers in the ongoing operation.
Meanwhile, sources in the interior ministry made it clear that the Rangers would serve in Karachi as long they are provided constitutional shield for their task.
The Interior Ministry is hopeful that the Sindh government wouldn’t show reluctance in issuing the communication for extending the period of Rangers deployment in Karachi, the sources added.
The law and order in Karachi couldn’t be maintained without support of the Rangers and the ongoing operation is essential in the best national interest, the sources maintained.
