KARACHI: Bilal IV came up with sterling performance to win the Karachi Club Bridge Congress Team Championship which concluded here at the club’s bridge hall on Sunday.
According to the information made available by the Karachi Bridge Associates (KBA) here on Monday, the Gulzar Bilal-led outfit, which also featured Farrukh Liaquat, Shaikh Abdul Muqeet and Wajahat Suri, dominated the two-day event, spread over six rounds and conducted on the Swiss Movement basis.
Bilal IV got off to a flying start and capitalised on it despite being challenged by Puri Estate, Hais and Data Steel.
They succeeded in holding on to their lead until the very end. They completed the victory with an unblemished record.
They started their march towards glory with a convincing victory over the fancied Masood IV by 13.71 VPs.
They overcame the onslaughts from Altruists (18.37 VPs), Hais (14.22 VPs), Puri Estate 10.73 (VPs), Data Steel (10.60 VPs) and Mazhar (18.76 VPs).
Puri Estate and Hais finished second and third, respectively.
Puri Estate, the champions of the Toyota Cup this year, lost a couple of matches, one against Hais and the other to Bilal.
The quintet of Hamid Mohiuddin, Ziaullah Baig, Khalid Mohiuddin, Mubashir Puri and Hasan Askari, performed quite well to claim the runners-up trophy.
Hais, comprising their regular family combination of mother, Rubina Hai, two brothers Zia and Ali, daughter Fatima Reza and their mentor Tehsin Gheewala, exhibited excellent grasp over bidding, dummy play and defence to claim the third position. They won four and lost two matches.
