Dr Rafique Ahmed laid to rest

LAHORE :Former vice-chancellor of Punjab University and renowned activist of Pakistan Movement Prof Dr Rafique Ahmed passed away here Wednesday.

He was laid to rest at Hazrat Mian Mir village graveyard. His Namaz-e-Janaza was led by Pir Syed Munawar Hussain Shah Jamati. NPT Vice-Chairman Mian Farooq Altaf, Jamaat-e-Islami Naib Ameer Liaquat Baloch, Punjab University Vice-Chancellor Dr Niaz Ahmad, Prof Dr Mazhar Saleem, Hafiz Marghoob Ahmad Hamdani, Akhtar Hussain Qureshi and people from different walks of life attended. He is survived by one son, Dr Fawad Ahmad.

Dr Rafique was appointed PU Vice-Chancellor in 1984. He had also served as Vice-Chancellor, Islamia University, Bahawalpur. He was a bachelor student at Islamia College Lahore at the time of partition. PU Vice-Chancellor Prof Niaz Ahmad and faculty members have expressed deep grief on his sad demise.

In his condolence message, Prof Niaz Ahmad said the country had been deprived of a veteran spokesperson for ideology of Pakistan. He said Dr Rafique was a great teacher and administrator and his services at various academic institutions would be remembered forever in golden words. He said the vacuum left by the sad demise of Dr Rafique Ahmad could not be fulfilled.

Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar had expressed deep grief over the death of veteran educationist and former VC of Punjab University Prof Dr Rafique Ahmad. In a condolence message, the chief minister extended sympathies to the bereaved family and prayed to Almighty Allah to rest the departed soul in eternal peace.
