Islamabad : Thousands of people visiting Islamabad’s Centaurus Mall on Sunday benefitted from a day-long awareness event designed to alert them to the hazards of diabesity—an emerging epidemic that indicates the coexistence of diabetes and obesity.

Organized by Ali Medical Centre, the activity featured free consultations, BMI, Hepatitis B and C screening, and several other diagnostic tests. Two leading endocrinologists and diabetologists Dr. Ali Arif and Dr. Sarwar Malik, consultant laparoscopic bariatric and general surgeon Dr. Atif Inam Shami, consultant plastic surgeon Dr. Uzair Qazi, and clinical and bariatric nutritionist Dr. Shahbaz Khan were available all day to examine and guide patients about diabesity. More than 1,000 free consultations were given during the day.

The rising epidemic of diabesity makes the adoption of healthy dietary habits and regular physical activity an absolute must. A healthy diet stabilizes sugar levels while regular workout can help control body weight and regulate other conditions which can lead to various types of metabolic disorders.

“Diabesity is a leading cause of heart disease, dementia, cancer, and premature death. One of the major causes of diabesity is insulin resistance. For a healthier life, one needs to choose foods that are high in omega-3, fibre, magnesium, zinc, vitamin B and D, and antioxidants. Diabesity if often described as a slow poison as its influence can neither be controlled nor cured,” one of the consultants was overheard informing a patient.

Discount offers were also given on bariatric surgery through lucky draw, as well as on laboratory and radiology, plus executive and general check-ups through coupons.
