Karachi University in collaboration with the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan has started a project which aims to address climate change in Karachi.
The strategy of the project is to provide climate change education through social outreach to the community in less privileged, peri-urban areas of the city. Department of Social Work Assistant Professor Dr Sakina Riaz, briefing Acting Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi and other high-ups of the varsity, said she and her team members, including students of the department, visited schools at Rehri Goth, Haji Qasim Goth and Gadap Town, to raise awareness about cleanliness, safe disposal of garbage and plantation.
She mentioned that the students were tasked to prepare diagrams on climate change health and hygiene. During the briefing, Dr Sakina Riaz presented an overview of the project and acknowledged the financial contributions of the Higher Education Commission and Karachi University to carry out the project.
She also thanked the GTC organisation for participating in this project, facilitators, and the project team. On the occasion, the VC said that faculties should start more such awareness projects about climate change. These projects would be beneficial particularly to the communities of less developed areas, while the rest of the Karachiites would also utilise sustainable solutions from such projects to resolve their problems.
The director of the Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialisation, KU, Professor Dr Alyia Rehman, shed light on the significance of community outreach programs and the ORIC contribution.
Earlier, Dr Sakina Riaz presented the report to the Dr Khalid Iraqi. She informed the participants of the meeting that the project successfully achieved its goals.
