CAIRO: Hardcore fans of Egyptian giants Al Ahly announced on Monday that they are suspending their activities for an indefinite period.
The decision — published on the group’s Facebook page — comes a month after violence reported in local press between some of their members and the police following a CAF Champions League match between Al Ahly and Mounana, of Gabon, in Cairo.
Members of the group, Ultras Ahlawy, which has more than 1.3 million followers on Facebook, could not be reached for comment. In 2012, 74 people died, most of them Ahly fans, in a riot at a game in Port Said against local club Al-Masry.The Egyptian league season was suspended.
