Russian teenager makes soccer history
MOSCOW: Teenage substitute Ilya Skrobotov became the first player born in the 21st century to score in the Russian Premier League when he hit an injury-time winner for Zenit St Petersburg on Wednesday. Defender Skrobotov, just 17, came on after 80 minutes and scored the crucial goal three minutes into time added on as Roberto Mancini’s team boosted their chances of a Champions League spot with a 2-1 home win over Dynamo Moscow. Skipper Domenico Criscito gave Zenit the lead in the 57th minute from the penalty spot after Dmitry Poloz had been fouled in the area. Bosnian defender Toni Sunjic pulled the scores level with just two minutes to go before Skrobotov’s dramatic winner. “I believe I deserve praise for giving a chance to Skrobotov,” said Mancini.
“I’m the man who discovered this player who I believe will become one of Russia’s first-choice players. “He’s very talented but needs to keep on working hard as he has the chance to become a classy full-back.” Table-toppers Lokomotiv Moscow were held to a goalless draw by visitors Akhmat Grozny.
