Women on Wheels trainees invited to PSL match

LAHORE: The Women-on-Wheels scheme trainees have been invited to the PSL semi-final being held on March 20 at Qaddafi Stadium.

The Women-on-Wheels campaign was initiated in 2015 in Lahore through provision of free motorbike training to women. It aims to provide women with their right to mobility and reclaim public spaces.

The trainees will participate in a rally. They will ride motorbikes with celebrities. The celebrities include iconic figures for women empowerment such as Jugnu Mohsin, Juggan Kazim, Sohai Ali Abro and Mira Sethi.

In line with the chief minister’s directions, the event aims to raise awareness regarding the need for safer spaces for women. Pakistan Cricket Board has played an instrumental role in promoting and strengthening women’s role in sports. The event would mark an important step for the promotion of women empowerment movement led by the Punjab government.

The Women-on-Wheels campaign has trained more than 3,500 women in the districts of Lahore, Multan, Sargodha, Faisalabad and Rawalpindi. The campaign provides free motorbike training and subsidised customised motorbikes to women. The applications for the Scheme are open till March 25, 2018. Walk to save fisheries: Government College University (GCU) organised an awareness walk to highlight the importance of maintaining the world’s fisheries. According to a press release issued on Sunday, Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Hassan Amir Shah led the walk organised by the university’s Zoology Department in collaboration with Knowledge Economy Programme. The officials from Pakistan Fisheries Society, Punjab Fisheries Department and a large number of private fish farmers participated in the on-campus walk.

GCU Zoology Department Chairperson Dr Muhammad Tahir said GCU intended to initiate fisheries based applied degrees and high-tech research. He said fish formed an important part of the diet of people particularly those living near rivers, coasts and other water bodies in the world.
