More than 1,100 students were awarded degrees at the 18th convocation of Sir Syed Institute of Information and Technology (SSUET) held at the Expo Centre on Saturday.
The university awarded six gold, silver and bronze medals to students who achieved the top three positions in BE programme of various engineering disciplines, besides awarding 40 masters’ degrees.
Amber Ashraf of computer engineering department, Muhmmad Obaid Ashraf of electronic engineering, Warda Ali Shah of telecommunication engineering, Anum Wasim of biomedical engineering, Muhammad Aqeel Ahmed of civil engineering and Muhammad Ahsan Shaikh of computer science department were awarded gold medals for achieving top positions in their respective departments.
The runners up who bagged silver medals were Ariba Aslam of computer engineering department, Muhammad Hassan Bashir of electronic engineering, Sadia Parveen of telecommunication engineering, Heena of biomedical engineering, Kashan Khan of civil engineering and Rabia Khan of computer science departments.
Bronze medals were taken away by Muhammad Usman Ghani of computer engineering department, Haider Ali of electronic engineering, Hira Tariq of telecommunication engineering, Maleeha Mehboob of biomedical engineering, Javeria Saleem of civil engineering and Yasir Ali of computer science department for securing the third position.
Speaking on the occasion, SSUET chancellor Engineer Muhammad Adil Usman proudly declared that the university had so far turned out more than 13,000 engineers who were trained to meet the challenges of the modern world.
He said graduates of SSUET held important positions in reputed national and multinational organisations both within Pakistan and abroad.
“Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology is a progressive institution that looks forward to meet the requirements of prudent technical education and practices,” he remarked. “For this purpose, the curriculum of engineering is regularly reviewed, upgraded and improved. Simultaneously, new disciplines are periodically added.”
Extending his congratulations to the new graduates and their parents, Engineer Usman said, “I am sure the young graduates will adopt high values of professional ethics and focus their attentions on building the nation and effectively utilising its natural resources.”
He advised the aspiring engineers to keep a positive attitude and think of solutions which could resolve challenges with confidence and determination.
“Our country is going through a critical phase, but we have great expectations and confidence that our young engineers will rise to the occasion and cope with the challenges ahead,” he said.
According to him, the SSUET had been established with a vision to provide the youth with modern knowledge in engineering and technology by the best of available human and material resources with high priority on imparting the values of tolerance and innovation.
SSUET vice chancellor Prof Dr Syed Jawaid Hasan Rizvi said the University had been making efforts to increase the number of available seats and introduce new fields of study. He said the university introduced degree programmes in software engineering, bioinformatics and architecture last year while this year the department of electrical engineering had also begun working.
At present, he said, the university conducts BS degree programme in 10 disciplines and MS degree programme in six disciplines, with PhD programmes in computer and electronic engineering.
He pointed out that SSUET had been the first university in Pakistan to introduce a degree programme in biomedical engineering.
According to Prof Dr Syed Rizvi of the Aligarh Muslim University Old Boys’ Association, said the association had had established the university in 1994 to consolidate socio-economic and technological development of Pakistan. He said more than 21,000 students had so far been enrolled at the university.
Earlier, in his welcome address, registrar SSUET Syed Abrar Ali congratulated students and their parents while wishing them a prosperous future.
