Umar to compete in 60 metre race today
KARACHI: England-based Pakistani athlete Umar Hameed will compete in the 60 metre race on Saturday (today) at the IAAF World Indoor Athletics Championships in Birmingham.
The 29-year-old Umar, who lives in Leeds, is the only athlete representing Pakistan in the major event. This is the second international event for Umar who made his international debut for Pakistan in the 2016 South Asian Games in India.
Umar has also featured in a number of national events in Pakistan. John Smith, who runs an academy in Birmingham, is his coach. Umar’s main event is 200m.In an interview with ‘The News’ the other day from Leeds, Umar said he was very excited to represent Pakistan at the biggest stage. “I am very excited to represent Pakistan,” Umar said.
He said that although 200m was his best event he would try to put in his best in the 60m in Birmingham. “I may not perform well as all my training is for outdoor but featuring in the event will add to my international experience,” Umar added.
