LAHORE: The Punjab Halal Development Agency (PHDA) has initiated a training programme for Lahore-based butchers working in the poultry industry.

The PHDA in the first phase will train 500 butchers in collaboration with the Local Government & Community Development Department, Punjab, and M/S Meat. Purpose of the training is to provide practical knowledge and on hand training to butchers to slaughter birds as per Shariah standards to keep the meat safe and healthy for human consumption.

Talking at the inaugural session, PHDA Chairman Justice (retd) Khalil-ur-Rehman said the training will provide the practical knowledge to the butchers about Halal slaughtering standards and scientific benefits of Shariah principles of animal slaughtering. He said PHDA will issue licence to trained butchers to work in the field and after the completion of training programme, only licensed butchers will be allowed to work in the field legally.

PHDA has already conducted butchers training programme who were working in the state slaughterhouses across Punjab in collaboration with USAID and now trained and licensed butchers are working in the field successfully, he added.
