Attack on transvestite, rights activist slammed
PESHAWAR: The civil society organisations on Saturday condemned attack on transgender community member and human rights activist in the city.
Taimur Kamal, a human rights activist, told The News that last night he along with some transvestites, including Sunny, Gurrya and Arzu, were coming from Hayatabad to drop them at their residence in Gulbahar.
He said some five unidentified armed men opened fire on his car when they reached Gulbahar.
He said the attackers smashed windscreen of his car and dragged them out from the car.
“The kidnappers threatened us and kidnapped Arzu at gunpoint at 2am,” he said, adding that the transvestite was set free at 6am.
He said they wanted to lodge a case at the Gulbahar Police Station, but the police registered it in the “daily diary”.
Human rights activists including Qamar Naseem, Radesh Tony, Gulalai Ismail and Imran Takar condemned the attack.
Criticising the police, they said several similar incidents had taken place in the limits of Gulbahar Police Station, but the police didn’t register the case.
