Property developer’s son, gangster killed in extortion-driven shootout
Two people were killed and five others, including a woman, were injured in what police said was an extortion-related shootout in Lyari on Tuesday.
District City SSP Adeel Chandio said the shootout in Street 6, Nayabad, near Ali Hotel, was between relatives of a local real estate developer, Rozi Khan, and gangsters from Lyari’s Badshah Khan gang.
The issue, as per the officer, was non-payment of extortion money and the victims were the property developer’s son, 28-year-old Raees, and a commander of the Badhshah gang, 30-year-old Fazal Dad.
The injured, all of whom were taken to Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi, were identified as Rozina Aijaz, aged 22, Zahid Shoukat, Saleh Mohammad, Khan Mohammad and Mohammad Mobeen alias Bobby, a commander of the Badshah gang.
SSP Chandio said Mobeen was the one pressuring Rozi Khan to pay the gang Rs1 million. He went to Khan’s office yesterday and opened fire at him and another staffer when the property developer refused to pay the extortion amount.
The officer said Mobeen, who is under treatment at CHK, and Fazal Dad, the gangster killed, were brothers and were wanted in multiple cases. Their third brother was killed in an encounter with the Lyari police a year ago, after which the family had shifted to Khokharapar, Malir.
