KP lawyers to observe strike today
PESHAWAR: In order to show solidarity with the Punjab lawyers and protest the alleged brutality of the Punjab Police against the lawyers, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bar Council announced a strike in the province today.
Vice-Chairman of KP Bar Council, Muhammad Sareer Khan, told The News on Monday the strike was called as per the decision of most members of the council. “We condemn the Punjab Police’s brutalities against the lawyers at the Lahore High Court. In protest, the lawyers will not appear in courts and observe complete boycott today,” he went on to say.
When asked, he said that the KP Bar Council’s decision was based on “Unity is our strength.” However, he said that both the bench and bar should resolve the issue peacefully without wasting any time.
He said that the KP Bar Council was in constant contact with the Punjab Bar Council to resolve the issue peacefully and avert such ugly incidents in the future. The incident took place when the police fired tear gas and water cannons on protesting lawyers who had gathered
at the Lahore High Court (LHC), where contempt of court proceedings were underway against Sher Zaman Qureshi, the president of the Lahore High Court Bar Association’s Multan chapter. A large number of lawyers resorted to violence after the court issued non-bailable arrest warrants for Qureshi and passed directions for the suspension of his licence for non-compliance with the court
