The Sindh High Court on Wednesday issued notices to the home secretary, IGP Sindh, SSP Korangi and others over a petition seeking a judicial inquiry into the alleged custodial death of a Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) activist.
The petitioner, Syed Mateen Hussain, an uncle of the deceased worker Syed Faraz Alam, submitted that his 22-year-old nephew had been picked up by policemen on December 28 from the Malir extension area.
He alleged that after days of illegal detention, Faraz was implicated in false cases only when family members challenged his arrest in SHC. Hussain asserted his nephew was excessively tortured during interrogation by Khokhrapar and Korangi police officials and held them solely responsible for Faraz’s death.
He said that despite assurances of an immediate inquiry from Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah and Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, no such efforts had been made yet and neither was any action taken against the policemen responsible.
Hussain requested the court to order a judicial probe into the matter and direct the police to register an FIR against the cops involved.
The SHC division bench headed by Justice Sajjad Ali Shah issued notices to the home secretary, IGP Sindh, SSP Korangi and others for their comments by February 9.
