According to reports, the IDPs will start returning to Fata by the end of February. The major task for the federal government is to manage Rs100 billion for the rehabilitation of IDPs which is required for the construction of their houses and other necessities, beside livestock. The provision of jobs is the joint responsibility of both federal and KP governments. I suggest that cottage or small-scale industries be set up for the people of Fata. The government can also seek the private sector’s help. Philanthropists can equally come forward to mitigate the sufferings of the Fata people.
Small-scale industries do not require large investment. They can be promoted both in rural and urban areas of Fata. The waste of large-scale industries, particularly cotton, sugar and steel, can be used as by-products. The women of Fata can also contribute in embroidery, carpet weaving and handicrafts in their houses. Cottage and small-scale industries can contribute 30 percent to exports in the manufacturing sector and can provide jobs to 80 percent of the labour force. The people of Fata deserve such support both by the government and people of Pakistan.
