KARACHI: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) on Friday inducted 187 executives in the Inland Revenue Service (IRS) to buoy up enforcement against tax evaders and defaulters.

The FBR, through a notification, appointed them at BS-16 grade at regional tax offices (RTOs) and large taxpayers units (LTUs). These officials passed the Federal Public Service Commission exams. Of total, 10 have been appointed at LTU Islamabad and Karachi.

Officials at the RTO Karachi said the team members were increased considering the human resource shortage, especially in the wake of an aggressive strategy to take action against tax evaders.

“These officials have been appointed at the security wing of RTOs. They will conduct raids at the premises of tax defaulters,” an official said on condition not to be named.

The official said such officials will also assist their senior officials in conducting surveys to identify the potential taxpayers.

The official said fresh inductees would be trained with modern methods to deal with taxpayers. “There will be a clear instruction that no coercive action will be taken against taxpayers,” the official said.

The new executives are authorised to take assistance from law enforcement agencies. Recently, the FBR changed the jurisdictions of RTOs. Some RTOs have been assigned to identify potential taxpayers through physical surveys.

The FBR, in the notification, directed the new appointees to join their duties at their assigned places by December 13. Seniority of newly appointed inspectors would be governed in accordance with Civil Servants (Seniority) Rules, 1993.
