Japan and Pakistan have close ties and the higher education sector could help further cooperation between the two countries in the fields of academics, research and cultural ties, said the Consul General of Japan in Karachi, Toshikazu Isomura, on Monday.

“It is a pleasure to see that the University of Karachi is keen to build up linkages with the Japanese universities,” he said while holding a meeting with the KU acting vice chancellor, Professor Dr Khalid M Iraqi, during his visit to the campus on Monday.

According to Dr Iraqi, the meeting was an initial step to promote linkage between the KU and the universities in Japan.

He mentioned that the honourable consul general of Japan had assured that opportunities of lecture series through video conferencing would be soon developed between the Tokyo University and the KU.

He stated that under a collaborative programme, the KU faculty and students would visit Japanese universities, which would help strengthen academic and cultural relations between the faculty and students of both the sides.

Professor Dr Iraqi said the KU would establish a Japanese language and cultural institute at its campus, which would assist the KU students in learning the Japanese language and introducing familiarity with their culture to enhance mutual friendship and trust.

Later, Dr Iraqi presented
a KU souvenir to the guest. KU Registrar Professor Dr Moazzam Ali Khan and KU Director Quality Enhancement Cell Professor Muhammad Sajideen were also present in the meeting.
