Rawalpindi:On the directive of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the Rawalpindi Waste Management Company (RWMC) organised ceremonies across the division to pay tribute to the sanitation heroes participating in the Eidul Azha cleanliness operation under the ‘Suthra Punjab Program.’ The main event for Rawalpindi Tehsil was held at a hotel on Sixth Road, says a press release.
Special Secretary for Local Government Punjab, Asiya Gul, was the chief guest, while the ceremony was presided over by MNA Tahira Aurangzeb. Other distinguished guests included MNA Raja Qamar-ul-Islam, Deputy Commissioner Rawalpindi Hassan Waqar Cheema, CEO RWMC Rana Sajid Safdar, former mayor Sardar Naseem, President Municipal Labour Union Raja Haroon, Chairman Changez Bhatti, Khan Majeed, Bilal Khawar, Bilal Niazi, Aamir Naik, Hassan Sardar, Nasir Mehmood, and various political, social, and media personalities.
During the ceremony, the chief guests expressed solidarity with the sanitation workers and distributed checks worth Rs10,000 each among more than 1,000 sanitation workers of Rawalpindi Tehsil. These checks served as a recognition of their tireless efforts and dedication to keeping the city clean during the Eidul Azha sacrificial days. In her speech, Special Secretary Asiya Gul stated that sanitation workers are the real heroes of Punjab. Acknowledging their services is a top priority for the Government of Punjab.
In line with Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s vision, efforts are ongoing to dignify the sanitation sector and provide relief to its workers. Presiding over the event, MNA Tahira Aurangzeb said that sanitation workers are the pillars of our society without whom no system can function. The government is committed to resolving their issues and providing permanent employment wherever possible.
MNA Raja Qamar-ul-Islam added that these checks are not merely financial support, but a practical expression of respect and honor for the workers. Our government is labour-friendly, and this vision comes directly from Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
Deputy Commissioner Hassan Waqar Cheema said that workers on the front lines of cleanliness are the guarantors of our cities’ beauty and health. The district administration will continue playing every possible role in their welfare.
Former mayor Sardar Naseem paid tribute to the sanitation workers, saying they are close to our hearts. The dream of development is incomplete without them. Raja Haroon demanded job security and permanent employment for sanitation workers.
CEO RWMC Rana Sajid Safdar stated that those who clean our city are its true builders. Their continuous efforts during Eid kept Rawalpindi clean. Providing them with financial assistance is not just an institutional responsibility but also a moral obligation. The “Suthra Punjab Program” is a revolutionary initiative by the Chief Minister of Punjab aimed at modernizing the sanitation system. We have also made progress in the board for regularizing 900 workers.
All political and social representatives present in the ceremony paid tribute to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s initiative and appreciated the policy of expanding the sanitation system to rural areas. Sanitation workers also shared their thoughts during the event, stating that for the first time they felt that their services were being truly respected. They thanked the chief minister, RWMC, and the district administration for this recognition.
