Pak-India trade deals to bring long term regional peace: Trump
“We’re working on a big deal with India and another one with Pakistan," says Trump
WASHINGTON DC: President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he helped calm down rising tensions between India and Pakistan, and he believes trade deals with both countries could help bring peace in the long term.
Speaking at the White House during a meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Trump said that the situation between India and Pakistan was getting worse but that he stepped in to help settle it.
“I think we settled it through trade,” Trump said. “We’re working on a big deal with India and another one with Pakistan. I asked them, ‘What are you guys doing?’ Things were getting deeper and deeper into their countries.”
Trump said he called the leaders of both countries to encourage peace. He also praised them, calling Pakistan’s leader “a great leader” and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi “a great guy.” “Someone had to be the last one to shoot,” Trump said. “I hate to say it, but we got it settled.”Trump added that sometimes events happen after the fact and people still try to blame him, but he remains hopeful that good relationships and trade can lead to a more peaceful future between the two nations.
