Political elitism

The National Assembly's decision to equalise parliamentarians' salaries with those of federal secretaries is deeply concerning and highlights a widening disconnect between the political elite and the people. The approval grants MNAs and senators a hefty monthly package, a move that appears insensitive and unjustifiable, especially in a country where many struggle to afford basic necessities. At a time of soaring inflation and economic instability, this salary hike reinforces political elitism rather than addressing the pressing economic concerns of the population.

What is even more troubling is the bipartisan consensus on this issue — from the PPP and the PML-N to the PTI -- lawmakers across party lines unanimously prioritised their financial interests. This cross-party unity, which is often missing on key national issues, raises serious concerns about misplaced priorities. In contrast, ordinary Pakistanis face crippling economic conditions, struggling with budget cuts, job losses, and rising living costs. Instead of focusing on governance and relief measures, lawmakers are indulging in self-enrichment at the taxpayers' expense.
