LAHORE:The government is likely to face a big challenge in stabilising banana rates in Ramazan as rates of the commodity have already skyrocketed while the lowest quality is being sold in the market.
However, due to the crop arrival ample stable supply of onion is expected which will give some relief to the government. Stabilising sugar price will be a big challenge as sale of limited quantity of sugar at Rs130 per kg at designated points will not impact the open markets.
Apparently, no such arrangements are made so far to counter this situation. The Punjab government has yet to set up subsidy and fair price shops for Ramazan to ensure availability of some basic essential items at lower than the market rates. However, the elected representatives and bureaucracy are least bothered to enforce the official rates and it seems that this practice will also continue in Ramazan.
