PTI holds protest march demanding Imran’s release
The Karachi chapter of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) held a protest march on Sunday to demand release of the incarcerated party founded Imran Khan.
The protesters also called for supremacy of the constitution and judicial independence.
A large number of PTI workers from various districts of Karachi participated in the march which started at the Karachi Press Club and concluded at the Mazar-e-Quaid.
The rally was led by Sindh PTI President Haleem Adil Sheikh, Karachi Division President Raja Azhar, General Secretary Arsalan Khalid and other prominent PTI leaders, including Khurrum Sher Zaman and Faheem Khan.
Addressing the participants, Sheikh said the Constitution granted the right to a peaceful protest, which the PTI was exercising.
"When the people of Karachi take to the streets, Imran Khan will also be freed from prison. The people of Karachi have always supported Imran Khan, as evidenced by the overwhelming mandate in the general elections when PTI won 22 National Assembly and 35 Provincial Assembly seats, which were later stolen through a conspiracy with fake Form-47," he said.
He also condemned the use of force against peaceful protestors in Rawalpindi the previous day, where shelling and firing took place.
Sheikh stated that the movement for Khan's release and judicial independence would continue. He also announced the party’s plan of holding a massive public gathering in Karachi.
Upon reaching the Mazar-e-Quaid, he addressed the gathering, lamenting the current state of Pakistan: "The Pakistan that Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah envisioned no longer exists. Today, the state oppresses its own people, empowering a corrupt political clique that denies citizens their fundamental rights," he said.
