PARIS: India’s Vinesh Phogat, who was due to compete in the women’s gold medal bout against Sarah Ann Hildebrandt (USA), has been disqualified after surpassing the 50kg weight limit Wednesday morning.
“It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the Women’s Wrestling 50kg class. Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning. No further comments will be made by the contingent at this time. The Indian team requests you to respect Vinesh’s privacy,” the Indian contingent official statement says. It is believed that Phogat got 100g higher than 50kg which automatically ruled her out.
