King Church raises the roof with £50,1000 boost to beloved royal church
King Charles marks third year since Queen Elizabeth’s death with gift to her beloved parish
King Charles has shown that when it comes to preserving royal history, he’s willing to put his money where the roof is.
The monarch has personally donated £50,000 to help repair St Peter and St Paul Parish Church in West Newton, a beloved sanctuary of his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II.
The annual financial report from the church confirms generous contribution, which will go toward fixing the ageing roof of the Grade II listed church nestled on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk.
This historic building, frequently attended by the late Queen and long cherished by the royal family, requires £200,000 in total to complete its restoration.
Charles’ donation comes three years after Queen Elizabeth II’s passing in September 2022 and after the community rallied to raise nearly £78,000 toward the cause.
The ongoing works include re-tiling the north slopes of the Nave and Chancel roofs, along with repairs to the organ loft and transept roofs. Church first sounded the alarm in 2023, issuing an “urgent” call for support.
“After a recent inspection of the church, we have been informed that our church is in urgent need of repair, especially to the roof,” the statement read.
“It is expected the works will cost in the region of £200,000, a daunting amount, but we are confident with fundraising events and the help of our local and wider communities, we will be able to successfully raise these much-needed funds.”
