X (formerly Twitter) is rolling out a major update to its direct messages system, rebranding it as X Chat.
It introduces a mandatory four-digit PIN for security linked to new end-to-end encryption.
But on the other hand, it has sparked backlash for feeling chaotic, intrusive, and disruptive to everyday use.
It is currently in beta for some users but expanding quickly. Here’s the breakdown:
Since then, Elon Musk changed the name to “X” on Twitter, the platform has seen a roller coaster ride, and it appears that it’s non-stop.
Now the latest update in the ongoing saga is a full-blown DM overhaul that is pushing users into a new feature called X chat.
The update, which is rolling out in beta, has sparked one burning question: what’s behind this, and how do we shut it down?
The most shocking element of the update is the demand for users to generate a four-digit passcode to access their messages.
In other words, Twitter DMs have now been converted into a digital ATM.
Although the PIN prompt is part of X Chat’s push for end-to-end encryption, its zero-warning rollout has triggered an internet meltdown. Once you’re in the new update, the mess begins:
Users who are desperate to switch off the PIN screen have been giving prompts to Grok for assistance.
In response, the platform’s AI suggested logging out and back in, stating this could reset encryption keys and skip the prompt. The AI also recommended avoiding the Chat tab entirely and turning off beta features privacy settings.
The catch is, this fix is temporary, and the update will likely become mandatory soon.
