Sydney Sweeney gracefully handles backlash over 'Christy' flop
Sydney Sweeney reflects on recent film flop: 'We do it to make an impact'
The career of any actor is filled with highs and lows, and Sydney Sweeney is experiencing that reality firsthand. After a streak of major successes with Euphoria and Anyone But You, the actress has hit a rough patch with her recent projects.
Her last three films — Madame Web, Eden, and the newly released Christy — have failed to connect with audiences or critics.
Christy, which has yet to premiere in Spain, performed far below expectations in the U.S., earning only $1.3 million in its opening weekend.
For a film debuting in more than 2,000 theaters nationwide, it marks a significant box office disappointment and the lowest opening of Sweeney’s career to date.
Despite the financial outcome, Sweeney remains proud of the project and its message. Taking to Instagram, she expressed her gratitude and the deeper purpose behind the biographical drama.
.“Thank you to everyone who watched, felt and believed in this story for so many years,” she wrote.
“If Christy has given just one woman the courage to take the first step towards safety, then we will have succeeded. So yes, I am proud. Why? Because we don’t always make art just for the numbers, we do it to make an impact. And Christy has been the most impactful project of my life. Thank you, Christy. I love you.”
