6.1 Earthquake panics Istanbul as buildings turned into rubble, several injured
Earthquakes are more frequent in Turkey as the region sits on the top of major fault lines
At least 22 injured and several buildings turned into rubble after a strong earthquake shook Istanbul on Monday October 27, 2025.
The magnitude of Istanbul earthquake was recorded 6.1 on rector scale.
Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) informed that the epicenter of the earthquake was located at the town of Sindirgi in Balikesir province at a depth of 5.99 km.
Disaster management authority informed three buildings were collapsed and turned into rubble while few people got seriously injured.
Furthermore, the aftershocks of the Istanbul earthquake also jolted the nearby provinces of Bursa, Manisa, and Izmir.
As per emergency services, the earthquake was strong but so far, no casualties have been reported.
According to the state-run agency, people were injured in panic-related falls, which can occur due to the physical and psychological impact of earthquakes.
“So far, we have not identified any loss of life, but we are continuing our assessment,” Sindirgi’s district administrator Dogukan Koyuncu told the state-run Anadolu Agency.
Additionally, Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya informed that AFAD teams are conducting more surveys to assess the damage.
“I offer my best wishes to our citizens affected by the earthquake, may God protect our country and our nation from disasters," said Yerlikaya.
Earthquakes in Turkey have severely affected the country's infrastructure to date.
According to geologists Turkey lies atop major fault lines, which is why earthquakes are more frequent there.
